Job Vacancy DetailsThis is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished new product development project manager. With an established and growing product development and engineering team, comprising electronic hardware, embedded software and electromechanical development resources, the company now need a full time product development project manager. The right candidate has the possibility to progress to the role of Technical Manager with responsibility for managing and developing the design and engineering team.

The North West based company sells its products across the world and is growing rapidly. Well funded, the company is on target to double turnover by 2015. A winner of the UK SME Manufacturing Company of the Year award, the company is a recognised leader in hazardous area and environmental gas detection.

The company designs and develop a range of hand-held and fixed installation gas detection and sensing devices together with intelligent control equipment. Most of the company’s products are design and certified to operate in hazardous areas and are designed to prevent accidents due to flammable and noxious gasses.

MAIN DUTIES – PROJECT MANAGER – NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Reporting to the Technical Director, to manage the company’s product development projects to ensure that short, medium and long-term project objectives are defined and delivered. The Project Manager will manage new product development projects from product specification, and project planning through to completion and launch. The main objectives include:

– Maintaining a viable cohesive product development plan that matches the company’s commercial strategy
– Effective execution of the plan, with effective utilisation of all relevant resources
– Up to date and accurate communication of progress.  Delivering projects to agreed specification and time-scales
– Effective use of other department’s resources in line with product development progress

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES – PROJECT MANAGER

Product development project planning – From clarifying initial product specification, through identifying, scoping and planning work packages, resource requirements, development risks and risk mitigation actions
Product development project management – Ensuring effective cross-functional implementation of product development projects.  Including project coordination meetings, planning updates and communication
Product development resource planning and coordination – Coordinate and plan product development resources across active development projects to ensure appropriate progress across multiple projects
Coordinate activities with other departments – Communicate with and engage other functions in new product development projects as required. Provide status updates to the executive management team on product development projects

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – PROJECT MANAGER

The role will require day-to-day liaison with internal and external resources: R&D, engineering, product development, manufacturing, technical support, marketing, sales and customers.The ideal candidate will have substantial first hand experience as project manager in electronic hardware & software product development. The role is ideally suited to an organised, proactive and self-motivated individual with a systematic approach to prioritising, planning and communication.

– Electrical or Electronic Engineering background – to BSc. level
– Substantial project management experience developing technical products in a B2B environment
– Experience of product specification, project planning, project execution in hardware/software
– Experience of coordinating and delivering new product on time to specification
– Some knowledge of instrumentation, sensing, gas detection or safety / process control would be useful

Applicants require strong written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical contact.
